About the WOC

The Week of Champions is a non-profit volunteer organization that provides sports camps for the children free of charge.  The camps are conducted by professional athletes with the theme of teaching them to be champions in life.  These athletes are all members of Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Athletes for Christ and other Christian ministries.  The camps are held on Hilton Head Island, Bluffton, Beaufort and Ridgeland.  The Week of Champions is held for one week in early June.   Week of Champions 2012 is the 34nd year of our program.  The dates for 2012 will be June 11-15, 2012.

The purpose of the Week of Champions is to promote and teach the fundamentals of football, soccer, tennis, golf, baseball, cheerleading and basketball.  At the same time, teach the campers Christian character.  The athletes share with the campers how essential it is to say “No” to drugs and “Yes” to Christ, and to live a wholesome, productive life.  Week of Champions promotes young people to stay healthy physically, psychologically and spiritually.

The seed for the success of the Week of Champions began 34 years ago. The idea for the Week of Champions began when a John Smalls Football Camp was held on Hilton Head Island.  Three Gator youth football coaches decided to bring professional athletes to Hilton Head Island to be positive role models for the area’s youth.  These coaches enlisted other concerned businessmen to help.  They asked Greg Brezina, a professional athlete, to recruit other pro athletes to put on an admission free sports clinic.  The businessmen on the island provided the players and their families with meals and housing.  In June of 1978, the Week of Champions became a reality.

It has grown to 55 athletes and over 2500 children and youth who participate in this program.

The ministry is managed by local business men who are concerned with the youth of Hilton Head Island, Bluffton, Okatie, Beaufort, Ridgeland  and the Low Country.  It is due to the faithful service of over 50 people and the support of many more that the Week of Champions is made possible every year
